چکیده

A common practice for resolving connicts among a group of agents is to let the majority decide. We formalize this principle and apply it to the problem of merging the knowledge of multiple agents. We then postulate logical properties that all knowledge merging operators should satisfy and give a model-theoretic characterization of all merging operators that satisfy the postulates. It turns out that the operators that satisfy the postulates are precisely those that induce a certain kind of partial pre-order over the set of possible worlds such that the models of the merged knowledge base are the possible worlds that are minimal with respect to the pre-order. Then, we review several previous approaches and study them in light of the proposed postulates. We then present a particular method for knowledge merging, CMerge, that satisses all the postulates. We show by example that CMerge appears to resolve connicts among knowledge bases in a plausible way. Finally, we show that CMerge can be implemented by an eecient syntactical transformation from the set of knowledge bases to be merged.

Information Sharing and Knowledge Merging in Cooperative Information Systems

Information sharing is the key issue in cooperative information systems. This issue is studied from a logical point of views in this paper. It is assumed that information in each component system is stored in a knowledge base expressed by a set of logical sentences. A formal method for merging multiple knowledge bases that might connict each other is presented. The method has a number of intere...

Merging Knowledge Bases in Possibilistic Logic by Lexicographic Aggregation

Belief merging is an important but difficult problem in Artificial Intelligence, especially when sources of information are pervaded with uncertainty. Many merging operators have been proposed to deal with this problem in possibilistic logic, a weighted logic which is powerful for handling inconsistency and dealing with uncertainty. They often result in a possibilistic knowledge base which is a...

Approaches to Constructing a Stratified Merged Knowledge Base

Many merging operators have been proposed to merge either flat or stratified knowledge bases. The result of merging by such an operator is a flat base (or a set of models of the merged base) irrespective of whether the original ones are flat or stratified. The drawback of obtaining a flat merged base is that information about more preferred knowledge (formulae) versus less preferred knowledge i...

Knowledge Base Stratification and Merging Based on Degree of Support

Most operators for merging multiple knowledge bases (where each is a set of formulae) aim to produce a knowledge base as output that best reflects the information available in the input. Whilst these operators have some valuable properties, they do not provide explicit information on the degree to which each formula in the output has been, in some sense, supported by the different knowledge bas...

An Argumentation Framework for Merging Conflicting Knowledge Bases

The problem of merging multiple sources of information is central in many information processing areas such as databases integrating problems, multiple criteria decision making, etc. Recently several approaches have been proposed to merge classical propositional bases. These approaches are in general semantically defined. They use priorities, generally based on Dalal’s distance for merging clas...
